Bowel Cancer: spotting the signs and taking action

This guide contains information about bowel cancer, its symptoms and treatment, and the steps to take if you are concerned about your health.

Early detection and prompt medical attention can make a significant difference, so don’t ignore symptoms. If you believe you have a medical negligence claim because of a delayed diagnosis or misdiagnosis, our team is here to support you every step of the way.

What is bowel cancer?

Bowel cancer, also known as colorectal cancer, affects the large bowel which includes the colon and rectum. It is one of the most common types of cancer diagnosed in the UK, with nearly 44,000 new cases each year

What are the signs and symptoms of bowel cancer?

Early detection of bowel cancer significantly improves the chances of successful treatment. Here are some common signs and symptoms to watch out for:
  • Changes in bowel habits: persistent diarrhoea or constipation, or a change in the consistency of your stool.
  • Rectal bleeding: blood in your stool or bleeding from your anus.
  • Abdominal discomfort: persistent cramps, gas, or pain in the abdomen.
  • Incomplete bowel movements: the feeling of wanting to go to the toilet but not being able to.
  • Unexplained weight loss: losing weight without trying.
  • Fatigue: persistent tiredness or weakness.

What are the treatment options for bowel cancer?

The treatment for bowel cancer depends on various factors, including the stage of the cancer, its location, and your overall health. Here are the main treatment options available:

  1. Surgery
Surgery is often the primary treatment for bowel cancer. The type of surgery depends on the size and location of the tumour:
Local excision: for very early-stage cancers, the tumour may be removed through a colonoscope.
Partial colectomy: removal of the part of the colon containing the cancer, along with nearby lymph nodes.
Colostomy/ileostomy: in some cases, a temporary or permanent colostomy or ileostomy may be necessary to help with recovery.
  2. Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy uses drugs to kill cancer cells. It may be used:
After surgery: to reduce the risk of cancer returning.
For advanced cancer: if the cancer has spread to other parts of the body.
  3. Radiotherapy
Radiotherapy uses high-energy radiation to target and kill cancer cells. It is commonly used for rectal cancer and may be used for colon cancer that has spread.
  4. Targeted therapy and immunotherapy
These treatments involve newer medicines that specifically target cancer cells or help the immune system fight cancer. They are often used for advanced bowel cancer.
  5. Palliative care
For advanced bowel cancer that cannot be cured, palliative care focuses on managing symptoms and improving quality of life. This may include pain management and other supportive treatments.

Medical negligence: bowel cancer misdiagnosis and delayed diagnosis risks

If bowel cancer is detected and treated early, it is a condition that most people survive. On a positive note, the numbers of people dying from bowel cancer has been falling for many years. However, the survival rate drops as the disease develops.
A delay in diagnosis or misdiagnosis of bowel cancer can have serious consequences. There are several reasons why this may occur:

  1. Symptoms overlap
Bowel cancer symptoms often overlap with those of less serious conditions, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or haemorrhoids.
  2. Age assumptions
There is a misconception that bowel cancer primarily affects older adults. Younger patients may experience delays in diagnosis because their symptoms are not immediately associated with bowel cancer. Bowel Cancer UK reports that 94% of new bowel cancer cases are diagnosed in people over the age of 50, but more than 2,600 new cases are diagnosed in people under the age of 50 every year.
  3. Incomplete testing
Failure to carry out adequate tests, such as colonoscopies, blood tests, or imaging studies, can result in missed diagnoses.
  4. Pathology and radiology errors
Mistakes made by pathologists and radiographers, such as incorrect interpretation of test results, can lead to misdiagnosis.
  5. Failure to follow up
Not providing the correct treatment after diagnosis or failing to follow the treatment plan can lead to worsening of the condition.
We have represented clients in bowel cancer claims including a fatal claim where failure to identify cancer on a CT scan led to a delay in diagnosis.

Other complications of bowel cancer treatment

Surgical errors

Complex surgery may be required to treat bowel cancer. The risks of surgery include infections, an anastomotic leak (a leak where two ends of the bowl are joined), a bowl obstruction caused by, for example, scar tissue.
Our client had an ileostomy reversal procedure during which a cut or tear was made to his bowel by a surgical instrument, resulting in severe symptoms and a deterioration of his condition: settlement for complications following bowel cancer surgery.
Another of our clients sadly died because of a leaking anastomosis which led to sepsis and peritonitis.

What should I do if I think I may have a bowel cancer claim?

Delayed diagnosis or misdiagnosis of bowel cancer can have serious consequences. If you believe that your diagnosis was delayed or incorrect, you may have grounds for a medical negligence claim. Here’s what you need to know:

  1. Seek legal advice: consult with a medical negligence solicitor who specialises in cancer misdiagnosis cases. They can help you understand your rights and the strength of your case.
  2. Document everything: keep detailed records of your symptoms, medical appointments, and any communications with healthcare providers.
  3. Gather evidence: your solicitor will help you gather necessary evidence, including medical records, expert opinions, and witness evidence.
