Naidex is Europe’s biggest and most far-reaching trade, professional and consumer show dedicated to the care, rehabilitation, and lifestyle of people with a disability or impairment. The theme of the exhibition is ‘setting no limit on potential’ and the event gathers suppliers of aids, equipment and services for the disabled along with informative seminar sessions over the three days of the show.
Speakers from Shoosmiths
Shoosmiths partner Denise Stephens will be speaking at NAIDEX in Theatre 4 on Thursday 30 March on the topic of the mutual journey client and lawyer take in pursuing these claims and will focus on James Robshaw’s case.
Most recently the firm achieved success in gaining £14.5m in damages – one of the largest court awards for birth injury – for 12-year-old James Robshaw. That award achieved by Denise Stephens (a partner in the medical negligence team with particular expertise in cerebral palsy cases) will pay for all James’ needs as a result of his cerebral palsy for the rest of his life. Funding was secured for 24 hour care, modifications to the home, disability equipment, and sophisticated Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) equipment to enable him to communicate and carry out his school work as well as funding for additional educational support.
Solicitor, Victoria Federico, who heads up Shoosmiths’s education law and special educational needs (SEN) team and is also speaking at NAIDEX in Theatre 2 on Wednesday 29 March.
Victoria will talk about overcoming the obstacles many face in obtaining funding for the technologies, therapies and support that constitute effective AAC as part of ongoing SEN provision.
The firm’s legal experts in this field are highly respected. Victoria was asked by David Wolfe QC of Matrix Chambers (regularly cited by the legal directories as a ‘leading barrister in this area’) and equally eminent education barrister Leon Glenister of Landmark Chambers to be one of only three education solicitors to comment on the draft of what is considered to be the definitive and authoritative online guide to SEN law and practice. The guide (available on the Shoosmiths website) is free to members of the public and is also circulated to all SEN Tribunal Judges and panel members, Local Authorities and other education solicitors.
Encephalitis support
Shoosmiths is also sharing stand space with The Encephalitis Society. Shoosmiths is proud to be a supporter of the charity and the excellent work they do.
Public Health England data suggests that there are 6,000 cases of encephalitis in the UK each year. Even if successfully treated, encephalitis can cause long-term complications such as memory loss, epilepsy, behavioural and personality changes or irreversible brain injury, all of which will have an impact on the future quality of life. Aside from promoting research and providing support to the families of those affected much of the work of The Encephalitis Society involves raising public awareness of the condition.
