Parents will be able to get personal advice about their rights to Special Educational Needs (SEN) provision from Victoria Federico, an education law expert with Shoosmiths, at the law firm’s Milton Keynes Shoosmiths office - 1st Floor, Witan Gate House, 500-600 Witan Gate, West Milton Keynes, MK9 1SH - on Monday 30 April 2018.
It is often difficult for parents to get the authorities to concede that their child has additional educational needs, let alone try to get adequate provision. Many parents feel that they have no option but to go along with what’s been decided, but that is definitely not the case and with the correct help and guidance, you don’t have to settle for second best when it comes to your child’s future.
Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCP) which replaced the old system of ‘statementing’ legally obliges local education authorities to provide support for any child or young person with identified Special Educational Needs right up to the age of 25.
Victoria notes that, while an EHCP is a powerful tool, it is only effective if it specifies exactly what support a child needs, so it is important to ensure that the Plan is comprehensive and properly drawn up.
Concerned parents will be able to get free initial advice about appeals against the content of an EHCP and discuss the process of making an appeal to the Special Educational Needs Tribunal as well as guidance about other means of SEN provision.
