Hidden Brain Injuries

19 May 2022

16-22 May 2022 is Action for Brain Injury Week 2022. Charities, including Headway and CBIT, are running the campaign “See the hidden me” to raise awareness that not all brain injuries result in physical disabilities that are evident from looking at a person.
Richard Bannister, specialist clinical negligence solicitor in our Birmingham team says “Brain injuries can leave sufferers with a variety of symptoms including, in the most severe cases, paralysis of some body parts but also hidden injuries including loss of cognitive function, which can significantly impact on how a person manages their day to day activities.

Hidden injuries can include epilepsy, headaches, dizziness, loss of coordination, confusion, poor concentration, memory problems, slurred speech, and personality changes. To the outside world, those with hidden injuries may not look any different and their disability may not be immediately apparent, however, that doesn’t mean the impact on their day to day life is any less than those with physical injuries.”

Shoosmiths help those with brain injuries to obtain the necessary damages to fund a dedicated care regime, catered to individual needs which can include Occupational Therapy, which can develop tools for an individual to manage everyday tasks and help with reminders; Assistive technology aids and equipment, which can help with communication; Neuropsychology, to help and individual developing coping mechanisms for any frustrations their disability may cause them; and, Speech and Language therapy, which can help with developing listening skills and breaking tasks down into small individual parts.

The aim is to improve physical and emotional functionality through rehabilitation to help restore a better level of independence  and truly make a difference to the lives of those who deserve it.
