Now in their 11th year, the PI Awards saw hundreds of professionals in the sector attend the black-tie dinner and ceremony hosted by comedian Justin Moorhouse, familiar to many through his appearances in Phoenix Nights. Competition in the Clinical Negligence Lawyer of the Year category was stiff, but speaking for the judge’s, Forum of Insurance Lawyers (FOIL) CEO Laurence Bessemer, said:
‘Kashmir Uppal is not only a mentor but an inspiration as well as an expert commentator in the media on her chosen specialist area. For her ground-breaking and determined campaign to expose criminal behaviour and deliver justice to the victims of that behaviour she was the clear winner.’
Kashmir Uppal has considerable expertise in dealing with large party or group actions and is recognised for her experience, application and commitment by influential legal directories such as Chambers and the Legal 500, who describe her as ‘handling pressure effortlessly’. In March this year Kashmir also won the prestigious accolade of ‘Partner of the Year’ at the Birmingham Law Society Legal Awards.
Her lead role in the high profile case of disgraced breast surgeon Ian Paterson and her diligent research and determined efforts to get to the truth as well as her tireless work in securing an agreed procedure for taking cases forward since 2010 convinced the judges to give her the award.
Kashmir expressed her gratitude for winning the award, saying:
‘I am delighted, honoured and humbled to win this award for working on what has undoubtedly been the most challenging, yet inspiring cases of my career. The award however, should go to all the many victims of Mr Paterson’s actions and crimes. They are the ones who have shown resilience, determination and strength of character in seeing justice done. I was privileged and proud to act on their behalf and be their spokesperson when required. Their conviction and passion was nothing short of inspiring and gave me the strength to carry on the fight. I think my lucky dress also helped!’
