Nick Tubb, clinical negligence partner in Shoosmiths’ Birmingham office says: “Access to employment is one of the everyday challenges that those with a spinal cord injury face.
“Work is a necessity for the vast majority of people to earn money for a comfortable life for them and their families. A debilitating spinal cord injury can turn an ordinary job into a daily ordeal which saps all of your energy. It can often leave someone exhausted at the end of the day, with no energy to do the normal daily activities. This often makes it impossible to enjoy life with evenings and weekends required to rest and recuperate to get ready for work the next week.”
He added: “As well as obtaining awards of damages for our clients for additional housing needs, assistance, aids, therapies, we investigate whether it is reasonable for someone to change their work pattern. If work adjustments and adaptations in the workplace are not sufficient it can be necessary for someone to change their job. Some people find that, even after changing their hours, they can’t manage to achieve a reasonable balance and it may not be reasonable for them to continue working at all. “
Shoosmiths help people obtain the necessary damages to compensate them for any loss of earnings as a result of changing hours, jobs or taking early retirement.
It is also important to support someone who has suffered serious injury in a bid to help them enjoy life and develop their potential. Nick has recently reached a settlement that has enabled our client to purchase an arm and leg-powered bike to take up distance cycling.
